An enthralling and emotionally charged novel

  1. Oktober 2023

"The Matchstick Boy" by Rowena Kinread is an enthralling and emotionally charged novel that plunges readers into a small, tightly-knit community plagued by secrets and past wrongs. The story unfurls with the tragic death of Jakob's young brother, Josef, in a rock avalanche. Jakob's unwavering belief that this was not an accident but a murder sets the stage for a gripping tale of justice and retribution.
Kinread skillfully constructs a narrative that keeps the reader guessing, drawing us into a world where privilege and power threaten justice and truth. The suspicions surrounding Ramun, the son of the matchstick factory owner, add layers of complexity to the story. Jakob's conviction that Ramun is responsible creates a palpable tension, particularly when the community refuses to acknowledge the possibility of foul play. This injustice resonates deeply, as it is a theme that echoes through the decades.
The story takes a harrowing turn when Jakob's deaf daughter falls victim to a heinous crime at the hands of Ramun, and the subsequent pregnancy further intensifies the family's quest for justice. The author explores the profound emotional trauma and resilience of the characters, shining a spotlight on the strength of Jakob and his daughter.
Throughout the novel, Kinread delves into the psychology of a close-knit community burdened by dark secrets. The unravelling of these long-held truths is both intriguing and unsettling, making the reader question the morality of those who remain silent in the face of injustice.
The book's title, "The Matchstick Boy," hints at the fragile nature of the human spirit, as well as the striking contrast between the flickering hope of justice and the darkness of secrets. The narrative delves into the multifaceted nature of truth, illustrating that reality is often obscured by personal perspectives, hidden agendas, and the weight of history.
As Jakob meticulously uncovers these hidden truths, the story takes unexpected twists, challenging assumptions and ultimately leading to a poignant revelation. The author's ability to keep readers engaged and emotionally invested in the characters and their quest for justice is a testament to her storytelling prowess.
"The Matchstick Boy" is a compelling exploration of justice, family bonds, and the human capacity for both cruelty and redemption. Rowena Kinread's writing is poignant and evocative, and her ability to create complex, relatable characters ensures that the story lingers in the reader's mind long after the final page is turned. This novel is a gripping tale of tragedy, resilience, and the enduring quest for truth in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds.

Fortune favours the brave and that is certainly the case in this murder mystery. The title is taken from the matchstick industry located at the foot of the Swiss Alps in the last half of the 19th Century. The search for justice intensifies during court proceedings leading up to the final verdict. Read this incredible book to find out what that is!
